Raleigh was simultaneously established as the North Carolina state capital and the seat of Wake County in 1792; it is one of the few cities in the history of the United States to be established with the intention of serving as a state capital. The city’s location was chosen because it was within 11 miles of Isaac Hunter’s Tavern, one of the state legislators’ favorite watering holes. Raleigh was named after Sir Walter Raleigh, who established the Roanoke Colony in 1587, approximately 190 miles to the north.

Today, Raleigh covers over 140 square miles of land and is home to a population of 431,746. Together with Chapel Hill and Durham, Raleigh makes up the well-known North Carolina Research Triangle. Raleigh was the birthplace of President Andrew Johnson and is also the site of the first African-American college in the South, Shaw University. The city’s downtown area contains numerous historic neighborhoods and sites, including the Sir Walter Raleigh Hotel, City Market, and the Fayetteville Street downtown business district.
